Drive against Pollution-causing Vehicles
By Nilesh, Hindustan Times
Traffic jams are a common sight in Chennai. But these days, they are on a rise for a different reason. All because of the special drive-by traffic police against the vehicles causing pollution. Major intersections of the city have been chosen and the concerned authorities can be seen in groups stationed at these points. Each and every vehicle is being stopped and their ‘No Pollution certificates’ are being checked. A fine of INR1000/- is being charged for the lapse. This drive is a positive step in achieving a pollution-free environment but has created a lot of inconvenience for the public and the daily commuters, as it has led to traffic jams. People are stranded on the roads for hours, getting late for their workplace. Though the new drive is highly appreciated by the people, they also feel that it is important that the public should not suffer. The authorities must find an alternative way for such a check that would cause less inconvenience to the general public
Environment Unfriendly Polybags
By: Kailash, Staff Reporter
The Times of India
In the year 2002 the government had banned the production and use of plastic bags in our country. But unfortunately, these are now being widely used again everywhere. Not only are we using a huge number of polybags daily but we are also discarding them in our drains uncaring about the fact that they will block the flow of drain water. Polybags are also a threat to our environment. They cause pollution, kill wildlife and are responsible for using up the natural resources of the earth. They are one of the main factors that litter the landscape. If burnt, they will infuse the surrounding air with toxic fumes.
The main problem of plastic bags is that they are non-biodegradable. The decomposition of plastic takes around a thousand years, so with the plastic rubbish produced each day it is likely that this problem will never be solved. While the government works out ways to lessen the impact of polybags on the environment each one of us too should shoulder some responsibility for this problem that ultimately harms us all.
